Desde entonces, oficialmente, forma parte de la geograf\u00eda pol\u00edtica chilena.
\nSe cumpli\u00f3 as\u00ed uno de los m\u00e1s sentidos anhelos del Libertador, General Bernardo O\u2019Higgins , qui\u00e9n, un a\u00f1o antes, minutos antes de fallecer, pronunci\u00f3 sus \u00faltimas palabras: \u201c\u00a1Magallanes\u2026Magallanes!\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

La toma de posesi\u00f3n la decret\u00f3 el Gobierno del General don Manuel Bulnes Prieto , el vencedor de la Batalla de Yungay, con qui\u00e9n O\u2019Higgins hab\u00eda conversado largamente en Lima cuando el Ej\u00e9rcito chileno ocup\u00f3 la capital peruana en la etapa final de la guerra contra la Confederaci\u00f3n Per\u00fa-boliviana.<\/p>\n

Le correspondi\u00f3 al capit\u00e1n Juan Williams , al mando de la goleta \u201cAncud\u201d , navegar hasta el Estrecho y actuar en representaci\u00f3n del Gobierno.
\nLa toma de posesi\u00f3n fue realizada f\u00edsicamente d\u00edas antes de que arribara un barco franc\u00e9s que tra\u00eda un destacamento que el Gobierno de Francia hab\u00eda enviado con la expresa misi\u00f3n de establecer soberan\u00eda francesa en el estrecho. Los marinos galos se encontraron con la sorpresa de que el lugar ya estaba ocupado y que la bandera chilena flameaba en lo alto de un m\u00e1stil de madera en el lugar donde se construir\u00eda el \u201cFuerte Bulnes\u201d .
\nA los franceses no les qued\u00f3 otra cosa que hacer que volverse a su patria, para informar sobre lo que hab\u00edan comprobado. Caballerosamente, compartieron primero en forma amistosa con los chilenos, que les obsequiaron, como recuerdos, algunas monedas chilenas.<\/p>\n
